About the Author The turbulent civil wars of the early seventeenth century would culminate in two events unique to British history; the public execution of a king and the creation of a republic. Schama tells of the brutal war that tore the country in half and created a new Britain - divided by politics and religion and dominated by the first truly modern army, fighting for ideology, not individual leaders. Simon Schama explores the forces that tore Britain apart during two centuries of dynamic change - transforming outlooks, allegiances and boundaries. From the beginning of July 1637, battles raged on for 200 years - both at home and abroad, on sea and on land, up and down the length of burgeoning Britain, across Europe, America and India. 2 dagar sedan · A History of Britain is a three volume work written by Simon Schama to accompany a series of documentaries he presented for the BBC. 2001-10-29 · This series is probably more interesting for a non British viewer because of the time period: the emergence of Great Britain out of conflict between England and Scotland, the waning of the power of the monarch, the related growth of the power of the elected assembly, catholicism vs protestantism, civil war (parliament vs the monarchy), democracy as a means of mitigating the power of the monarch, exploration and growing relationships with the world beyond Europe. However, Schama's thesis thankfully stepped beyond the usual boundaries of dates and famous names. His joint focus on social and political history helped breathed new life into a very familiar story. At its best, A History of Britain proved that the usual emphasis on Kings and Queens fails to expose history's subtleties.
